The good people behind Slack are aware of this and have a great article that can help you. When I login in the web or open the Slack app, I appear as Active even though I set it to Away the last time I closed this application. If Slack is not updating new messages chances are your connection is causing the issue. This bug is present in both the web version and the app. Scientifically proven (or at least rumored) to make your working life simpler, more pleasant, and more productive.
